Summer is Here — Let’s Plan a Salty Dog Party!

Properly Posh Pets is a proud curator of some of the best and most fun pet party products on the internet.  Links below include affiliate links to help us continue sharing the best with you.

My dog and I invite you to come sail with us to the perfect summer party to celebrate vacations, the ocean, sandcastles, and beach cocktails!  We are planning our annual Salty Dog Party.

We were lucky to have the chance to spend one summer vacation staying at a small cottage at the local marina, and our party that year was perfect with lots of anchor and boat ornaments, toy lobsters and starfish, and wooden boats – along with the real boats right outside our door!

This year, we will decorate our party space with “Beach Rules” to set the scene — “Build Sandcastles,” “Catch the Waves,” and “Party like a Pirate.”

Our party playlist is easy and fun:

  • Lots of Jimmy Buffett including Margaritaville and Cheeseburgers in Paradise
  • Beach Boys, for sure, including Good Vibrations and Surfin Safari and
  • Under the Boardwalk, of course, from the Drifters

Let’s Seas the Day – and get this party started!

The Classic Cocktail – The Salty Dog

The perfect beach cocktail for a party with pups is the Salty Dog.  We’ve created our own special take on this classic drink –The Barking Salty Dog –– and a mocktail version — The Barkless Salty Dog.

The term “salty dog” is nautical slang for an experienced sailor.  My pup and I may not be experienced sailors, but we have lots of experience planning and enjoying parties – and drinking Salty Dogs!

For a variety of other ocean-themed cocktails, check out our next blogpost to find recipes for the “Shipwreck” and the “Deep Sea Martini.”

The Barking Salty Dog

Ingredients
  • ½ ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1 ½ ounces vodka
  • ¾ cup fresh ruby red grapefruit juice
  • Garnish with lime slices and coarse kosher salt
Directions
  • Dip rim of highball glass into lime juice, then into kosher salt to coat.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice.
  • Add grapefruit juice, lime juice, and vodka.
  • Shake vigorously for 10 seconds.
  • Strain over ice into prepared glass.
  • Garnish with lime slices.

The Barkless Salty Dog

Substitute sparkling water for the vodka.

The Party Food

Plan a menu that is classy, but easy – lobster mac and cheese bites, mini corn muffins, mini crab cakes, and tomato and mozzarella skewers.  Our Salty Dog Party Kit includes recipes for these Seaside Snacks.

The Pup Treats

Party food for people is important, but the key ingredient to keeping your Pup Guests happy is to have lots of tasty Pup Treats.  We always try to include our feline friends in our party plans, even if they are content to stay at home and gossip about the party afterwards, so a Cat Treat is also on our party prep list.  Check out our next party blog post for two special treat creations from Properly Posh Pets – Peanut Butter Pirate Ships and Ali’s Salmon Sailboats.

My Dog —  First Mate Forever

My dog and I love sharing good times with our friends.  There is nothing more fun than inviting your friends and their pups into your life for a celebration – for a special pup birthday party or just because summer is finally here, the sun is out, and the ocean nearby is sparkling with beautiful boats.

Tomorrow my dog and I will sail – first mates forever, dreaming of more Salty Dog parties and hoping this summer never ends.
