I’d rather not live in a world without dogs – and cocktails.

Lucky for us the month of May is perfect for celebrating both and kicking off anticipation for summer with this Party Blog on Classic Summer Cocktails and Fun New Cocktail Dog Toys.  May is National Pet Month and World Cocktail Day is May 13^th so let’s plan a party.   Parties are mini-vacations from life – and I definitely need a vacation right about now to celebrate the end of a long, cold winter.

Summer parties are perfect for serving Margaritas and Cosmopolitans, which are two of the best Classic Cocktails, but with potential for mixing it up creatively with variations on both.  National Cosmo Day is May 8^th, so a perfect excuse for celebrating.  Too bad we missed National Margarita Day in February – but who celebrates with Margaritas in the middle of winter?

Part of being an adult is knowing you never need much of a reason to eat cake, have a cocktail or throw a party with dogs – because any kind of party that involves dogs is THE BEST kind of party.

WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIALS FOR YOUR YAPPY HOUR PARTY?

As a pet parent, have you noticed how many new dog toys have a cocktail or alcohol theme?  Could it be that our dogs have found out our secret  – that Cocktails are the spark that make your party festive and fun.  Dogs are so smart that they found their own way to make Cocktails fun.

The Margarita 

Jimmy Buffet appropriately said, “If life gives you limes, make margaritas.”  Tequila, lime, and a little salt are the basics, but you can then make it frosty, on the rocks, elegant, blue, or relaxed. 

Proper Margarita glasses are essential for this Classic Cocktail paired with fun cocktail party napkins.

Classic Margarita 

• 1 ounce tequila
• 1 ounce Cointreau
• 1 ounce fresh lime juice
• Kosher salt and lime wedge, to rim the glass

Run the lime wedge around the rim of a stemmed cocktail glass.  Dip the moistened rim in the salt.

In a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine the tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice.  Shake well, then strain into the prepared glass.  Squeeze the lime wedge into the cocktail.

The Yappy Hour Margarita 

Your dog can join in the fun with this Muttgarita dog toy, the Spirits 3-pack with a bottle of Tequila, a cocktail dog collar, and a Drinking Buddy dog bandana.

Skinny Margarita 

• 1½ ounces tequila
• 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice (about 1 large lime)
• 1 ½ tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice (about ½ medium orange)
• Kosher salt and lime wedge, to rim the glass

Run the lime wedge around the rim of a stemmed cocktail glass.  Dip the moistened rim in the salt.

Margarita Mocktail 

• 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
• 1 ounce freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
• 1 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice
• 5 ounces lime sparkling water
• Kosher salt and lime wedge, to rim the glass

Run the lime wedge around the rim of a stemmed cocktail glass.  Dip the moistened rim in the salt.

In a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine the lime juice, grapefruit juice, and orange juice.  Shake well, then strain into the prepared glass.  Add the lime sparkling water.  Squeeze the lime wedge into the cocktail.

The Cosmopolitan

This frothy pink drink can be a balanced, sophisticated cocktail when mixed properly.

Basic Cosmopolitan 

• 1½ ounces vodka
• ¾ ounce Cointreau
• ¾ ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
• ½ ounce cranberry juice
• Orange twist or lime wedge to garnish

In a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine the vodka, Cointreau, lime juice, and cranberry juice.  Shake well until the outside of the shaker is very cold.  Pour into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with the orange twist or lime wedge.

The Yappy Hour Cosmopolitan

Cosmopolitan Mocktail

• 3 ounces cranberry juice
• 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
• 1 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice
• 2 ounces lime sparkling water

In a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine the cranberry juice, lime juice, and orange juice.   Shake well until the outside of the shaker is very cold.  Pour into a chilled cocktail glass  and add the lime sparkling water.  Garnish with the orange twist or lime wedge.
